“The Backwards Brain Bicycle”
The video tells us about Mr. Destin Sandlin experiment. When he was
child, he learned to bike and he did it. Then, his friend Barney called him 25
years later and gave a challenge. He asked Destin to ride the backwards
bicycle. If he turns the handlebar to the left, the wheel goes to the right and
vice versa. Firstly, he could not pass the challenge. Destin said that he had
the knowledge of how to operate the bike but he did not have to understand.
Meanwhile “knowledge is not equal understanding” said Destin. He tried five
minutes a day for 8 months and finally he did it, while his son just need two
weeks to ride it. He also told us three point that we can learn from the
experiment they are : 1. Welder are often smarter than engineers 2. Knowledge
does not equal understanding 3. The
truth is truth.
Because of I study in English Department, from the video we can take a lesson that learning English language for us is
like learning to bike. When we were child our parents taught us about Javanese
or Bahasa Indonesia everyday, so that we can speak both of them easily now. But
how about English language that our parent never told us about it? It has same
case with Destin to ride backwards bicycle. If we want to speak English
fluently, we need practice more and more (eventhough it was really hard for me). Although we have studied all times and we think that we have
understood about it, if we never practice our knowledge it will be very useless
for us even we forgot the lesson. By practicing something we will understand
about it. As Mr Destin explain, a young child has neural plasticity than adult
it means that children have a much more plastic brain. It explains us that we
must study hard and practice it, it is
our chance while we are young. Moreover, practice is very important to
increase our speaking ability especially I am as English Department College
students.
That’s what I can learn from the video, the video really
pump my motivation to speak up everywhere and alltime. Hope you enjoy it!
